Finnish melodic heavyrocker’s Leverage breaks the silence and comes back on track with new single and new line-up!
«Somewhere during the lengthy Leverage-hiatus I started writing heavy rock songs with guitarist, extraordinare Mikko Salovaara (Kiuas etc.) for Kimmo Blom to sing. This was at first more like ’therapy’, making music just to make music. I’ve been writing with Kimmo on and off for different purposes for a long time, and we hit it off really well between three of us right from the get go writing and demoing what I’d call pure heavy rock», tells Leverage’s founder, guitarist and songwriter Tuomas ”Tuoppi” Heikkinen and continues:
«Later, on another sidenote, having played some really cool Rainbow Dio-era tribute gigs under the Wolf Moon Rising-moniker (Leverage minus Pekka and Torsti and with Kimmo on the vocals) we started feeling that we must move on. One way or the other. Of original Leverage members, Torsti had already changed his career towards writing film score, and Pekka was busy singing for a living in coverbands and also working with Brother Firetribe who are great at what they do. There’s never been any issues or nothing but brother-like friendship between any of us, it was just becoming obvious that we couldn’t continue Leverage as a heavy rock band with the same line-up.»
«In ways, this is a circle closing. Kimmo was meant to be the vocalist on the first pre-production demos of what became Leverage’s debut full length-album ’Tides’. Back in the day, Kimmo was too busy at that time with Urban Tale for it to really happen.»
«I still have early very rough demos of what became ’Superstition’ and ’Gone’ for ’Tides’, with him singing», Heikkinen replies.
«And it was sheer luck and coincidence that I met Pekka and we got on the way. Pekka is a fantastic singer and a friend for life. Anyway, now it’s 2018, Leverage is back with new music and aim to put out more & get out to play this year», Heikkinen promises.
«On ’Red Moon Over Sonora’ we wrote the basic chords and some of the ’indian hum’-melody together with Mikko, and I took it on from there. This was already some time ago. Going through demos, from last few years, some very recent, some a few years old, this song popped out as something to finish now and put out as our first new song. It’s got a great fresh vibe to it, while still being very much what Leverage has always been, old school heavy rock with intense vocals and a ’story’. Something old, something new», Heikkinen says.

BREAKING NEWS: We are excited to welcome back to the Frontiers’ family the recently reunited Finnish Melodic Metal masters LEVERAGE!
Leverage landed on the scene with the independent release of their debut album, “Tides” in 2006. With their blend of Symphonic and Melodic Hard Rock, with some Progressive Metal twists, Leverage created a buzz on the scene and were signed by Frontiers for the release of their second album, «Blind Fire» in 2008 before moving to a different home for their next album, «Circus Colossus» (2009). The band became inactive not too long after the release of that album.
Somewhere during the lengthy hiatus, guitarist and band founder Tuomas Heikkinen started writing some heavy rock songs with Mikko Salovaara for Kimmo Blom to sing. This was at first more like ’therapy’….making music just for the sake of it. However, writing with Mikko and especially later, getting to play some Rainbow tribute gigs under the «Wolf Moon Rising» moniker, the guys started to get the feeling that the time was right to make the next step and bring back the sleeping monster that is LEVERAGE. The new lineup now includes Kimmo Blom (ex-Urban Tale) on vocals, Tuomas Heikkinen and Mikko Salovaara on guitar, Marko Niskala on keyboards, Sami Norrbacka on bass, and Valtteri Revonkorpi on drums.
«Of original Leverage members, Torsti Spoof had already switched his career to writing film scores and Pekka Hansio Heino was busy singing working with Brother Firetribe,” says Tuomas. «There’s never been any issues and nothing but brother-like friendship between any of us, it was just obvious that we couldn’t continue LEVERAGE as a heavy rock band with the same line-up. In a way, this is a circle closing. Kimmo was actually supposed to be the vocalist on the first pre-production demos of what became ’Tides’ back in the day, but he was too busy at that time with Urban Tale for it to happen.»
«It’s a blast to enter a new era with the new line-up and a renewed relationship with Frontiers, who we believe is the powerhouse for bands like us,” concludes Tuomas. «We’re super excited about the new music we’re working on right now and look forward to sharing it through new releases and playing live.”
You can expect new music very soon as the band is set to deliver a digital only EP this year and a new release to come in early 2019!

From the band’s 2018 digital only EP «The Devil’s Turn» – Release date August 27th, 2018.
Leverage landed on the scene in 2006 with the release of their debut album, “Tides”. With their blend of symphonic and progressive metal and melodic hard rock, Leverage generated a buzz amongst rock and metal fans and were signed by Frontiers for the release of their second album, “Blind Fire” in 2008. The band’s third album, “Circus Colossus” was released via Spinefarm in 2009, but the band became inactive not too long afterward.
Now, after a near decade of hibernation, Leverage is back with an amazing new singer, Kimmo Blom (Urban Tale, Raskasta Joulua) and a new guitar player, Mikko Salovaara. The forthcoming digital EP, “The Devil’s Turn» will serve as an introduction to the new Leverage line-up as well as an appetizer for the band’s forthcoming fourth album.
In producer and main songwriter Tuomas Heikkinen words, “[t]he songs on the EP were written over a period of several years, with ‘Dead Man’s Hand’ being the oldest song and ‘Children Of Skyfall’ the most recent. With those two and ‘The Unicorn’ plus ‘Wheels From Hell’, the EP covers a pretty wide range musically, but were chiseled into a sound and form we feel good about. It’s all heavy rock, not any form of power metal. Not that there’s anything wrong with prog metal or power metal or whatever, but right now we feel that we want to capture something that is recorded with a live feel, with no exaggerated choirs or orchestrations all over the place, etc., so that we can deliver the stuff live also without using background tapes, etc. and to be able to have some freedom too.”
On “Wheels From Hell”, Tuomas says the «way we’ve been writing with new guitarist Mikko (Salovaara) is that we’ll come up with a ”theme”, like let’s write a song about this or that. With this one we aimed to write a fast paced rock song about a herd that steamrolls over anything in its way. And also, we wanted it to be an old school band thing with double guitar solos and all that. It just started taking shape pretty fast. We had a great time with this one right from the get go, the thing’s got a great drive, and Kimmo nailed the vibe perfectly with the aggressive and somewhat over the top (in a good way) vocals. This song will be great live too.”
Leverage’s new line-up will make their live debut on July 21st at John Smith Festival in Laukaa, Finland.
