A finales de 2016 el sello independiente Contante & Sonante rescató de un viejo cajón material inédito de una pareja de talentosos compositores compuesta por Cecily Gardner y Scott Fuller. En esta entrevista Scott Fuller nos habla de su trayectoria musical y de su flamante trabajo «Original Demos».
Scott, antes de nada, gracias por concedernos esta entrevista y enhorabuena por tu CD, Gardner & Fuller “Original Demos”.
– ¿Cómo os conocisteis y comenzasteis a componer juntos? ¿Qué os inspira a la hora de escribir o tocar? ¿Hay algún artista en particular que os inspirase cuando empezasteis a componer?
Cecily y yo nos conocimos en San Francisco, allá por finales de los 80, tocando en bodas y bolos. Pronto descubrimos que a los dos nos encantaban artistas como Brenda Russell, David Foster, Kenny Loggins, y muchos otros grupos “West Coast”.
– ¿Cuál fue la primera canción que escribisteis juntos?
Seguro que Cecily se acordará mejor que yo, pero creo que “I Can’t Wait” fue de las primeras canciones que hicimos juntos.
– Cuando escribís conjuntamente ¿qué va primero, la música o la letra?
Muchas de nuestras colaboraciones han surgido de una idea que tenía Cecily para un título o para las letras de una estrofa. Entonces llevamos a cabo una tormenta de ideas y partimos de ahí. Todo sucede de una manera muy orgánica.
– Ambos habéis compuesto muchas canciones. Scott, ¿cuáles son tus favoritas?
Es complicado escoger una favorita, especialmente ahora que Cecily y yo colaboramos en un nuevo álbum, con temas nuevos que nadie ha oído todavía y que, inevitablemente, se convierten en tus temas preferidos. Yo diría “Nothing I Wouldn’t Do”. Warren Wiebe improvisó las voces de fondo y estoy muy satisfecho de cómo quedó.
– Me encanta el tema “17 Years”. ¿Cómo lo escribiste? ¿Cómo se acopló al estilo de Warren Wiebe?
Bueno, es de las pocas canciones de las que puedo decir que escribí la música y la letra. En un principio sólo tenía una idea de cómo iba a ser la letra, pero inmediatamente se convirtió en un homenaje musical a David Foster. No puedo expresar con palabras lo importante que ha sido David en la formación de mi estilo musical.
– Una de mis canciones preferidas es “Nothing that I wouldn’t do”. ¿Cómo la escribiste?
Recuerdo que poco tiempo después de componer “Nothing…” descubrimos que contenía un diálogo entre un hombre y una mujer. Imagina si Cecily y Warren hubieran tenido más oportunidades de colaborar juntos… ¡Magia!
– Háblanos de tu formación musical. ¿Cuándo y por qué comenzaste con la música? ¿De niño, escuchabas música en casa?
Comencé mi formación musical con clases de piano a los seis años. Con trece ya tenía claro que quería aprender a tocar las canciones POP de autores como Burt Bacharach y James Taylor, The Beatles y Carole King. Mis primeros recuerdos musicales proceden de los discos que tenían mis padres, como “A Warm Shade of Ivory” de Henry Mancini y “Love Music” de Sergio Méndez.
– ¿Qué te viene a la mente cuando oyes los nombres de David Foster y Warren Wiebe?
Conocimos a Warren en un evento para compositores en L.A. David le hizo subir al escenario para que cantara algunos de sus grandes temas y el público se quedó alucinado al escuchar su voz. Nos dijimos: “¡Tenemos que pedirle que cante algunas de nuestras canciones!”
– ¿Qué opinas del mercado musical en la actualidad si lo comparamos con el de tiempos anteriores?
El negocio musical ha cambiado muchísimo desde los años 80 y 90. Te cito a Quincy Jones que dice que el negocio musical ya no existe. Creo que en su lugar tenemos emprendedores. Todo el mundo tiene que financiar y promocionar su música hoy en día si quiere llegar al público.
– ¿Cómo es tu trabajo ahora?
Cecily y yo nos encontramos en puntos diferentes de la costa, por lo que todo lo hacemos online. Deseamos sinceramente sacar una secuela de “Original Demos” un día de estos. Creo que todavía hay un público ahí fuera para la música pop sofisticada y ¡estoy impaciente porque todo el mundo escuche nuestra música!

Scott, first of all thanks for making this interview and congratulations for your CD, Gardner & Fuller “Original Demos”.
– How did you two meet and start writing together? What does inspire you when you are creating or playing music? Is there any artist that inspired you specially when you started writing songs?
Cecily and I met in San Francisco back in the late 1980’s playing weddings and small gigs around town. We soon discovered that we enjoyed a lot of the same artists like Brenda Russell, David Foster, Kenny Loggins and so many other «West Coast» bands.
– Which song was the first that you wrote together?
I’m sure Cecily will have a better recollection but I think one of the first songs we completed was «I Can’t Wait».
– When you write together, what comes first, the music or the lyrics?
Many of our collaborations happened where Cecily had an idea for a title or lyrics for a verse and we just brainstormed and collaborated from there. It happened very organically.
– The two of you have written so many songs. Scott, which of your songs is your favorite?
Choosing a favorite song is tough, especially now as I’m working with Cecily on a new album and there are fresh songs nobody’s heard yet that are quickly becoming favorites. I’d have to say «Nothing I Wouldn’t Do». Warren Wiebe improvised background harmonies and I’m so proud of how that one turned out!
– I love your song “17 Years” How did you write this song? How was the song placed with Warren Wiebe?
Well it’s one of the only songs I can say I wrote both music and lyrics. I just had the lyric idea in my head and it quickly became an homage to David Foster musically. I can’t state how important David was in shaping my musical style.
– One of my favorite songs is “Nothing that I wouldn´t do”. How did you write this song?
I remember that very quickly in writing «Nothing» we discovered that a male/female dialog was unfolding. Imagine if Cecily and Warren had been given more opportunities to collaborate… magic!
– Tell us about your musical education. When did you start with the music and why? When you were a child was there a lot of music at home?
My music education started when I began taking piano lessons at the age of 6. By the age of 13 I knew I wanted to learn POP songs like those written by Burt Bacharach and James Taylor, the Beatles and Carole King. My first important musical memories were albums my parents had like Henry Mancini «A Warm Shade of Ivory» and Sergio Mendez «Love Music».
– If we mention David Foster and Warren Wiebe, what comes to your mind?
It was a songwriters event in L.A. that introduced us to Warren. David brought him to the stage to sing some of David’s hits and the crowd was stunned at hearing Warren’s voice. We said to each other «We must have Warren sing some of our songs!»
– What do you think about the music business nowadays comparing with the past?
The music business has changed so much since the 80’s and 90’s. Quincy Jones was just quoted as saying «There is no music business anymore». I think today we have music entrepreneurs instead. Everyone must fund and promote their music today if they want to reach an audience.
– How do you work these days?
Cecily and I are on different coasts so everything is done online. It’s our sincere wish that one day a sequel to «Original Demo’s» will be released. I believe there is still an audience out there for sophisticated pop music and I can’t wait for people all over the world to hear our new music!
